WHAT IS ASHWAGANDHA?
Ashwagandha is an extremely popular herb with strong adaptogenic properties. For millennia it has been used in Ayurvedic medicine, and it’s known as the Strength of the Stallion — and has been most commonly used to strengthen the immune system. In recent years, Adaptogens have become increasingly popular for a multitude of health benefits — with Ashwagandha being one of the most powerful.
Ashwagandha has become very popular over the last few years, and a vast amount of companies sell it. Most supplements simply provide the roots of the herb, dried, and ground to powder — and the quality varies depending on the quality of the herb itself, and how it is processed into powder. The amount of bioactives (Withanolides) varies massively — which is why it’s important to go with a standardised extract.Sensoril has very high levels of the active compounds, is full-spectrum, and has very low levels of heavy metals.
The most common method of analysing is Gravimetric testing - which is cheap and fast... but unfortunately can overestimate Withanolides by 2-4x. The most accurate method is HPLC, which gives exact amounts of each compound - but is only used by a handful of the best Ashwagandha producers, such as Sensoril and KSM-66.
Generic Ashwagandha = 1-2% Withanolides (or less, due to Gravimetric testing)
Solgar Ashwagandha = 1.5% Withanolides
KSM-66 = 5% Withanolides (HPLC)
Sensoril = 11% Withanolides (HPLC)
SENSORIL VS KSM-66?
The 2 most popular types are KSM-66 and Sensoril… Both are patented, stringently tested — and both have been used in a multitude of clinical studies.KSM-66 use the roots only, and contain 5% Withanolides — whereas Sensoril provide a full-spectrum (leaf & roots) with guaranteed over 10% Withanolides (independant tests show 11%). As to which is best, depends on the person, and what they are looking for… Many users have found KSM-66 too stimulating, and better for an athletic boost — with Sensoril being more powerful for tackling stress, mood, adrenal fatigue, and sleep.
WHAT DOES ASHWAGANDHA DO?
We do not personally make any claims or promises about health benefits, but Ashwagandha has been extensively studied in hundreds of medical trials, and is one of the most popular health supplements. Some of the professed benefits include:
Managing and controlling Stress/Anxiety — as an Adaptogen, it can lower Cortisol levels, improve your ability to handle stress, and lower anxiety.
Improve Thyroid Issues — several studies indicate that it can boost and balance TSH and T4 levels for people with underactive thyroids.
Relieve and prevent Adrenal Fatigue — Studies have shown it can support your adrenals, balance hormones, and help recover from Adrenal Fatigue
Tumour-fighting Abilities — scientists have discovered that Ashwagandha can prevent the growth of cancer cells… and help restore the immune system after chemotherapy.
Cognitive Boost — the active Withanolides have been shown to improve cognitive function, especially memory — and improve focus.
Prevent Degeneration of the Brain — medical studies show that not only can it block the harmful effects of stress, it shields the brain from cell degeneration.
Supports and Boosts the Immune System — as an adaptogen, it can balance the immune response from your body by preventing over-inflammation, and reducing stress responses.
Increases Muscle Strength, and Endurance — trials have shown that it can increase strength gains from working out, and improve oxygen absorption.
Balancing Testosterone, & Supporting Male Fertility — researchers found it to increase Testosterone in men by 17%, increase sperm count, and reduce oxidative damage
Can reduce Blood Sugar Levels, as well as LDL Cholesterol and Triglycerides — a 2 month study reduced bad cholesterol by 17%, and triglycerides by 11%
HOW TO USE:
If you are new to Ashwagandha or Sensoril, start with 1 capsule per day — high quality Ashwagandha is very safe, but some people find very high doses can be too sedating. It can be taken at any time of the day, but if you don’t suffer from stress and anxiety, you may want to take it in the evenings to avoid any sedating effects during the work day.
If taking more than 1 capsule daily, spread the dose throughout the day (e.g. morning and night), and avoid taking more than 4 capsules in a day.
It is generally not recommended to use Ashwagandha if you suffer from muscular degenerative diseases such as Lupus or M.S — or if you have Liver Damage (this applies to all herbs and supplements).
